Rapper Kanye West has been announced as the headline act for Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park, north London, prompting calls from Jewish organizations and political figures for the UK government to deny him entry. West is scheduled to perform for three consecutive nights from July 10-12.
The booking has drawn sharp criticism due to West's history of antisemitic remarks and actions. These include instances where he referred to himself as a Nazi, released a song titled "Heil Hitler," and sold clothing featuring swastikas online. In 2022, his account on X was suspended after posts, including an image combining a swastika and the Star of David, alongside a caption stating he would go "death con 3 on Jewish people." He was also barred from entering Australia last year following the release of the "Heil Hitler" track.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism urged the government to block West's visa, arguing his presence would not be conducive to the public good. The organization stated that if festival management insisted on his performance, only the government could intervene. The Jewish Leadership Council also condemned the festival's decision as "deeply irresponsible."
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer expressed "deep concern" over the booking by Festival Republic, part of Live Nation. London Mayor Sadiq Khan also weighed in last week, stating that West's "past comments and actions are offensive and wrong, and are simply not reflective of London’s values."
The controversy has already led to consequences for the festival, with headline sponsor Pepsi confirming its withdrawal. Separately, West's request to perform at Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium was reportedly rejected due to the football club’s historical connection with London’s Jewish community.
In January, West issued a full-page apology in a major newspaper for his comments, stating he was "not a Nazi or an antisemite." He attributed his actions to losing touch with reality due to bipolar disorder, adding, "I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state."
Wireless Festival organizers had previously issued a press release calling West's scheduled performance an "extraordinary chapter" in the event's history. He remains the only act announced for the festival so far. Wireless Festival was contacted for comment.
