Callum Turner has emerged as a leading contender to become the next actor to portray James Bond, with screen tests underway as producers move closer to a decision on who will succeed Daniel Craig. Turner, 36, known for his roles in the television series The Capture and the Fantastic Beasts films, began auditions at Bray Studios in Berkshire, joining a shortlist that reportedly includes up to five actors.
Among Turner’s main competitors are Jack Lowden, 36, who stars in Slow Horses, and Josh O’Connor, also 36, recognized for his work in The Crown. Australian actor Jacob Elordi, 29, is also believed to be part of the running, a choice that some fans have met with skepticism given long-standing expectations that Bond be portrayed by a British actor.
The ongoing casting process marks the conclusion of a five-year search for Daniel Craig’s replacement. A source involved in the selection described the coming days as critical, emphasizing the producers’ thorough approach to narrowing the field. Bond producer Amy Pascal previously indicated that an announcement could be expected by the end of the year, setting the stage for filming to begin next year under the direction of Denis Villeneuve, best known for his work on Dune.
Pascal stressed the importance of finding a distinctive and compelling new Bond, noting the challenge of following Craig’s portrayal. “It’s got to be something really different... stirring and exciting,” she said.
The James Bond franchise has historically been defined by a small group of actors who have officially played the role created by novelist Ian Fleming. These actors include Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.
As casting progresses, the industry awaits confirmation of the next actor to take on the iconic role, a decision that will shape the future direction of the long-running series.
