Cameron Smith is set to lead the field as the Australian PGA Championship returns to Sydney for the first time in three decades, while also preparing for another high-profile duel with Rory McIlroy at the Australian Open on the Melbourne Sandbelt next year.
Smith, currently competing on the LIV Golf circuit and a former world No. 2, will headline the Australian PGA Championship at The Lakes Golf Club from November 26. The event relocates to Sydney while Royal Queensland undergoes preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. Smith, a three-time winner of the Joe Kirkwood Cup, is expected to be among the favorites at the tournament, which is regarded as a demanding test for golfers, especially when windy conditions arise.
The Australian Open will be held at Kingston Heath Golf Club in 2026, marking the second year of a multimillion-dollar agreement designed to attract top international players, with McIlroy confirmed as the headline act for the Melbourne event. The Northern Irish star, who recently secured back-to-back Masters titles, is slated to bring significant attention to the tournament as organizers seek to boost its global profile.
Smith expressed strong motivation to secure his first Australian Open title after narrowly missing out in 2025. He was defeated by Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen on the final hole at Royal Melbourne, a loss that has fueled his determination to win the Stonehaven Cup. “The Australian Open is a tournament I’ve always wanted to win,” Smith said, highlighting the prestige of the event and the significance of competing on a course with as much history as Kingston Heath.
Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland praised Smith as one of the premier Australian golfers of his generation and noted ongoing efforts to attract further international stars to the revitalized tournaments. From 2027 onwards, the PGA Tour will play an active role in promoting the Australian Open, including plans for a substantial increase in the event’s prize fund to enhance its standing on the global calendar.
In addition to Smith, the Australian contingent at the upcoming Open Championship at Royal Birkdale includes several prominent names such as Min Woo Lee, Jason Day, Adam Scott—who is making his 101st consecutive major appearance—Lucas Herbert, Travis Smyth, and Cameron John.
Smith’s participation in both domestic and international competitions underscores his commitment to representing Australian golf on multiple stages, while organizers emphasize the growing stature and commercial appeal of these flagship events.
