ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler faced a challenging outing in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Monday, as the Tampa Bay Rays secured a 5-2 victory at Tropicana Field. Despite his confidence entering the contest, Schlittler was unable to replicate the dominant performance he delivered earlier in the postseason.

Schlittler entered the game tied for the third-most strikeouts in Major League Baseball this season, expressing belief that he could generate key outs against the Rays’ potent lineup. However, Tampa Bay’s hitters were aggressive from the outset, making solid contact and applying consistent pressure throughout the Yankees’ 4 1/3 innings of play.

The game’s momentum shifted decisively in the fifth inning when Schlittler surrendered a four-run rally. With the score tied 1-1, a single by Jonathan Aranda and a double by Junior Caminero loaded the bases with no outs. Schlittler, who recorded only two strikeouts on the night, was unable to generate a critical punchout at that moment. Instead, Liam Hicks reached base on a slow infield tap that allowed the go-ahead run to score.

The inning further unraveled when Chandler Simpson, down in the count, executed a swinging bunt that created a self-inflicted defensive error. Rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr., focused on covering the plate, mishandled the ball in a play that allowed an additional run to cross. This sequence underscored the Rays’ strategy of applying pressure through putting balls in play and capitalizing on defensive miscues.

Yankees infielder Ryan McMahon and Jazz Chisholm Jr. both committed errors earlier in the game, contributing to an unearned run in the opening inning. Schlittler acknowledged the impact of these defensive lapses, as well as his own struggles on the mound. “I just didn’t have my stuff today,” he said, noting a slight decrease in velocity compared to his previous start against Boston, where he pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts.

Following Schlittler’s departure, reliever Brent Headrick entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed two inherited runners to score, extending the Rays’ lead.

The loss evened the series and placed additional pressure on the Yankees’ pitching staff as they seek to rebound against a Rays team that continued to demonstrate resilience and tactical execution in this high-stakes postseason matchup. Schlittler said he will review his performance with the goal of improving in future outings. “All I can do is assess my outing and realize that it needs to be better than that,” he said.
