Jason Arday, who became the youngest black professor at the University of Cambridge in 2023, has resigned from his position amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of plagiarism and academic misconduct. The university announced the inquiry following new information regarding Arday’s academic qualifications, honorary appointments, and research integrity. Jesus College, where Arday was a fellow, has also initiated its own separate investigation.

Arday, who held the post of Professor of Sociology, made his resignation public through a letter addressed to colleagues and published by the Good Law Project. In the letter, he expressed deep sadness over his decision to step down with immediate effect but emphasized that the move was necessary for his wellbeing. He further stated that the scrutiny he faced had taken a “profound toll” on him and those close to him. Arday denied accepting any wrongdoing and described the allegations against him as unfair characterizations. He conveyed his intent to return “stronger, wiser, and with the same determination” but asked for space to begin a new chapter.

The inquiry was prompted by reports accusing Arday of plagiarising substantial portions of his PhD thesis and other research publications. The university noted multiple ongoing complaints relating to his research and confirmed that these are being reviewed under its misconduct in research policy. In addition, there have been claims questioning the validity of some of Arday’s personal achievements, including his assertion of completing numerous endurance challenges—such as running dozens of marathons in a short timeframe—and raising millions of pounds for charity. Some of these claims have been described as exaggerated or unverifiable, including fundraising totals and philanthropic projects.

Arday has denied the plagiarism charges and other allegations, describing portrayals of him as dishonest or fabricating his accomplishments as “totally unacceptable.” He has not publicly addressed the specific details of the accusations but highlighted that his resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt or loss of faith in academic values.

Cambridge’s announcement stressed its commitment to thoroughly examining the new information concerning Arday’s qualifications and honorary titles while also handling the complaints of research misconduct in accordance with institutional policies. The university has faced pressure to investigate since revelations about Arday’s work and claims emerged over the past week.

The case has drawn attention due to Arday’s prominent role within Cambridge and his status as a notable academic figure.
