Authorities in the Wilayat of Masirah, within the Governorate of Al Sharqiyah South, have completed a marine cleanup campaign targeting coral reef protection. The initiative, organised by the Environment Centre in Masirah in partnership with the Masirah Municipality and local volunteers, focused on removing abandoned fishing nets, fish traps, and other marine debris from the reefs.
Over the course of the campaign, participants collected 3.8 tonnes of discarded fishing nets, 300 kilograms of iron fish traps, and an additional 4.1 tonnes of assorted marine debris. These efforts aim to mitigate threats to the area’s coral ecosystems, which are vital for marine biodiversity and the local fishing industry.
The campaign reflects ongoing efforts by regional authorities and community groups to address environmental challenges affecting coastal areas. By clearing harmful materials from the reefs, the initiative seeks to preserve the health and resilience of marine habitats in Masirah and support sustainable resource use.
