A campaign led by chef Tom Kerridge has submitted a petition to Downing Street calling for a reduction in the value-added tax (VAT) applied to the hospitality sector. The petition, supported by over 400,000 signatories, urges the government to lower VAT from the current 20% rate to 10%, aiming to help revive the industry amid ongoing financial pressures.
Kerridge, known for his television appearances, emphasized the potential impact of a VAT cut on the hospitality industry’s recovery. He stated that such a measure could help transform business closures into reopenings, reduce job losses, and revitalize local high streets. The petition was presented in collaboration with representatives from several industry trade bodies, including UK Hospitality, the British Beer and Pub Association, and the British Institute of Innkeeping.
The hospitality sector has been facing heightened operational costs in recent months, with businesses citing rising expenses related to energy, wages, food supplies, beer duty, and business rates as significant challenges. Industry leaders argue that a lower VAT would provide much-needed relief and encourage consumer spending, supporting the survival and growth of independent venues and public establishments.
The petition garnered support not only from business owners but also from members of the public, reflecting widespread concern about the sustainability of hospitality operations under current tax and economic conditions. While there has been ongoing debate about the best approach to support the sector, campaigners hope that the government will consider the proposed VAT reduction as part of broader efforts to stimulate economic recovery in the hospitality industry.
