Oman is confronting growing challenges in securing sustainable freshwater supplies amid increasing demand from its expanding population, agriculture, and industrial sectors. The country’s water stress is exacerbated by rising temperatures, declining groundwater levels, and the broader impacts of climate change, prompting a reevaluation of its long-standing reliance on desalination.
Historically, Oman’s desalination plants have been powered primarily by natural gas, a process that, while effective, consumes large amounts of energy and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. As the nation pursues a shift toward cleaner energy sources, experts are increasingly looking to renewable energy as a way to enhance both water security and environmental sustainability.
Renewable energy technologies such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power are becoming more economically viable for desalination applications, according to recent assessments by the International Renewable Energy Agency. Declining costs in renewable electricity generation now make it feasible to produce desalinated water at lower operational expenses over the lifespan of a plant, while also significantly reducing carbon emissions.
Oman is particularly well-positioned to capitalize on these developments. The country benefits from some of the highest levels of solar irradiation globally, alongside extensive coastal areas—especially in the south—that provide strong wind resources. This geographic advantage opens the possibility for hybrid renewable energy systems capable of supplying stable electricity to desalination facilities throughout the year.
Advancements in desalination technology also bolster this potential. Reverse osmosis, which has become the dominant desalination method worldwide, requires considerably less energy than earlier thermal methods. When reverse osmosis plants are powered by renewable electricity, they can notably cut both operational costs and environmental impacts.
Several countries have already begun integrating renewable power into their desalination projects, providing useful examples for Oman. Saudi Arabia has initiated large-scale solar-powered water production facilities, while Australia and Spain have experimented with renewable energy to supply plants during periods of peak renewable generation. These international experiences highlight both the technical and economic feasibility of renewable-powered desalination, offering valuable insights for Oman as it navigates its own water resource challenges without compromising reliability.
