Saudi Arabia and Canada are entering a new phase of strengthened bilateral relations, highlighted by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent visit to the Kingdom. Saudi Ambassador to Canada Amal Almoalimii described the visit as a significant milestone that underscores the growing momentum in cooperation between the two nations since the restoration of diplomatic ties in 2023.
Almoalimii emphasized that the renewal of diplomatic relations and the exchange of ambassadors last year have led to increased engagement, driven by mutual respect and aligned interests. Since she assumed her post in 2023, the ambassador has actively worked to deepen connections with various Canadian government bodies, the private sector, and academic institutions. She noted a positive response, particularly from Canadian businesses, which are showing heightened interest in investment and partnership opportunities in Saudi Arabia.
In recent months, both countries have hosted numerous high-level visits as part of efforts to expand cooperation across key sectors. Saudi ministers responsible for education, industry and mineral resources, investment, and foreign affairs traveled to Canada to discuss collaboration, while the Kingdom welcomed Canadian officials including ministers of international trade, artificial intelligence and digital innovation, and foreign affairs. Carney’s visit, accompanied by Canada’s ministers of finance, national defence, and foreign affairs, represents the latest and most comprehensive exchange, demonstrating a shared commitment to building on this forward momentum.
Beyond government-to-government ties, the two countries are also fostering closer academic and professional relationships. The Saudi Embassy in Canada has worked to enhance partnerships with Canadian universities and professional organizations, such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, aiming to support educational collaboration, training, and accreditation.
Saudi Cultural Attache to the US and Canada Tahany Albaiz highlighted the significant growth in academic exchanges, as evidenced by increasing numbers of Saudi scholarship students studying and graduating in Canada. She noted that Canada remains a preferred destination for Saudi students due to its advanced educational and healthcare systems, especially in medical education, clinical training, and scientific research. This expanding academic cooperation reflects the broader strengthening of ties between the two countries.
