Canadian prop DaLeaka Menin has been named a finalist for World Rugby’s Women’s 15s Player of the Year award, one year after her teammate Sophie de Goede received the honor. The 31-year-old from Vulcan, Alberta, is competing against England fly-half Zoe Harrison, centre Megan Jones, and New Zealand No. 8 Kaipo Olsen-Baker for the prestigious accolade.
Menin, who currently plays for Exeter in England, has been a pivotal figure for Canada’s national team. Known for her role as a tighthead prop, she anchors the Canadian scrum with significant physicality and technical skill. Canada’s head coach, Kevin Rouet, described her as “the best tighthead [prop] in the world,” highlighting her impact on the team’s forward pack. Despite the demanding position, Menin frequently plays extended minutes well into the second half, a contrast to the trend of front-row players being substituted earlier in matches.
World Rugby praised Menin for her powerful scrummaging and relentless work rate across the field, emphasizing her importance in providing a strong platform for Canada against top international competition. Menin’s contributions were particularly notable in recent matches against England, one of the world’s leading teams. She scored two tries during a 26-26 draw in Exeter on September 19 and added another try in Canada’s landmark 24-21 victory over the Red Roses in Toronto on October 16.
With 77 international caps, Menin is Canada’s second-most-capped player and is closing in on matching Tyson Beukeboom’s record of 84 caps. She made her senior debut in 2015 against New Zealand and has represented Canada in the 2017, 2021, and 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cups. Menin began playing rugby at age 12, having previously played for the Calgary Hornets and Canadian under-20 teams. Off the field, she holds a degree in law and society/sociology.
Menin’s nomination follows a line of Canadian players recognized for their excellence in women’s rugby, including de Goede, who was nominated in 2022 and won in 2025, as well as Magali Harvey, who won the award in 2014. Other Canadians shortlisted in recent years include Kelly Russell (2014) and Alex Tessier (2024).
In addition to Menin’s nomination, Canadian scrum-half Olivia Apps is up for the International Rugby Players’ Association Women’s 15s Try of the Year, underscoring Canada’s continuing presence on the international women’s rugby stage.
