Carmel Langdon, a 68-year-old former model living in Spain, and her husband Carlos Lugo, 35, have rekindled their relationship after a previous separation linked to Carmel’s cancer diagnosis and treatment. The couple, who first married in August 2020, overcame significant personal challenges during their years together.
Langdon, originally from Coventry, moved to Spain as a teenager and worked for several years as a property agent. In April 2020, she met Lugo, an Italian waiter and barman, when he inquired about local housing. The pair quickly developed a romantic connection, leading to their marriage just four months later in Gibraltar. The significant age difference—33 years—drew attention and occasionally judgment from onlookers, but the couple continued undeterred.
Their relationship faced a major test in late 2021 when Langdon was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent extensive procedures, including a unilateral mastectomy followed by a preventive mastectomy on the other breast, as well as a radical hysterectomy after the discovery of endometrial cancer. Subsequent radiotherapy added to her physical and emotional strain during this period.
Langdon said her health challenges magnified insecurities around her body and the age gap between her and Lugo. She believed he might prefer someone younger and felt conflicted about their future together. Lugo, who had no prior experience caring for an ill partner, reportedly struggled to provide emotional support at the time. This strain contributed to the couple’s decision to divorce in April 2024, with Lugo moving into a cabin on Langdon’s property. Both then pursued separate relationships, though Langdon remained single while Lugo had a few short-term partnerships.
Despite their separation, the pair eventually recognized a mutual desire to reconcile. Encouraged by friends, they gradually reconnected and resumed their relationship in July 2026. Langdon emphasized how they have grown more understanding of each other, now putting aside previous concerns about the age difference. “I’m past worrying that Carlos deserves someone younger,” she said, highlighting the joy and companionship he brings to her life.
Lugo credited Langdon’s emotional intelligence as a primary reason for falling in love with her, dismissing the age gap as irrelevant. Reflecting on the difficulties during Langdon’s illness, he acknowledged that he wished he had been better prepared to support her emotionally but affirmed that his attraction to her never waned.
The couple plans to remarry and hold a larger celebration in their local village. While some friends were initially skeptical about their reunion, they have since expressed support. Langdon, now retired but formerly a local radio presenter, said she and Lugo are eager to formalize their renewed commitment, underscoring their unique bond and shared resilience.
