A two-story home on Hickory Lane in Canton was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon, leaving one resident injured and prompting a firefighter to be hospitalized for exhaustion after battling the blaze and a subsequent rekindling early Monday. The fire initially broke out around 3:45 p.m. at the residence located at 11 Hickory Lane, according to authorities.
Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy flames extending from an enclosed rear porch up into the attic and roof, said Canton Fire Chief Jamie Meier. Firefighters worked to suppress the fire from inside the house but were forced to retreat outside when the roof began to collapse.
The sole occupant of the home was found injured outside the structure and was transported to a Boston-area hospital with burn injuries that officials do not consider life-threatening. Tragically, a pet labradoodle inside the house died in the fire. The home was completely destroyed by the blaze.
The fire appeared to have been largely extinguished by the end of Sunday evening. However, according to the local firefighters union, it reignited shortly before 3 a.m. on Monday morning while the homeowner was attempting to board up the damaged building. The renewed fire spread quickly to a camper vehicle nearby that contained propane tanks and caused damage to the vinyl siding of a neighboring house.
One firefighter received treatment for exhaustion at a hospital as a precaution, officials said.
The Massachusetts state fire marshal’s office, which assisted with the investigation, considers the fire accidental. Spokesperson Jake Wark indicated the likely cause involved embers from a portable fire pit that had been used on the back porch. The fire remains under investigation as authorities continue to determine the full circumstances leading to the incident.
