Average car insurance premiums in the United Kingdom have shown only a slight decrease in the most recent quarter, reflecting continued pressure on motorists amid rising costs and more complex vehicle repairs. Data from the July to September 2026 period indicate that the average annual premium stands at £587, a marginal fall from £619 recorded in the previous quarter.

Most regions across the UK experienced either stable or mildly declining insurance costs, with the exception of Northern Ireland, where premiums increased by 1 percent. Experts attribute the persistent high prices to a combination of increased claims volumes, advancements in automotive technology, and the rising expense of repairing modern vehicles.

Older drivers, defined here as those over 65 years of age, continue to benefit from comparatively lower premiums, though the decreases remain modest. Their average premiums dropped by just £4 to £427 during the same period. Regional variation persists within this group: premiums range from £333 in Wales to £574 in London. Northern Ireland and London emerge as the most expensive areas for older drivers, with average premiums exceeding £500, whereas more affordable premiums, near £350, are seen in North East England, South West England, and Wales.

Greg Wilson, CEO of Quotezone.co.uk and an industry analyst, highlighted the ongoing financial strain for motorists. “It’s disappointing to see prices remain stubbornly high, especially when motorists have been faced with rising fuel costs over the last few months,” he said, noting the strain from record-high diesel prices reaching £2 per litre.

Wilson emphasized that while external market forces limit the ability to lower premiums significantly, consumers can still pursue savings through strategic actions. He suggested measures such as comparing quotes widely, avoiding automatic renewals, ensuring accurate declarations of annual mileage, and opting for annual rather than monthly payments. Additionally, factors like vehicle choice, overnight parking arrangements, and incorporating safety features can influence insurance costs. For instance, selecting a car with a smaller engine, parking it on a private driveway close to the residence, or installing a dashcam may contribute to reduced premiums.

Quotezone.co.uk, a price comparison platform aiding over four million customers annually, aggregates offers from more than 150 insurance providers to assist drivers in identifying cost-effective policies. The company also provides incentives, including supermarket vouchers, to policy purchasers.

Despite modest quarterly improvements, the overall landscape for UK car insurance remains challenging for consumers seeking relief from rising motoring expenses.
