The name Carlos has appeared more frequently at the FIFA World Cup than any other, according to a recent analysis. With 78 instances recorded throughout the tournament's history, Carlos tops the list of the most common player names at the event.
Following Carlos, the names Luis and José are tied for second place, each appearing 61 times at the World Cup. The name David rounds out the top four, making it the fourth most common name among participants.
In addition to names, the study also examined birth months and astrological signs of World Cup players. It found that January is the most common birth month for players appearing in the tournament, while Aquarius is the most frequent zodiac sign.
A representative from Vegas-Insider, the group responsible for the study, noted that the combination of being named Carlos, born in January, and under the Aquarius sign appears particularly significant in World Cup statistics. The spokesperson explained that in many countries, youth football academies start their training year on January 1. This timing can give players born in the first quarter of the year developmental advantages that accumulate over time, creating what the study described as a “statistical fingerprint” evident across World Cup history.
These findings offer insight into patterns that have emerged over decades of international football competition, highlighting how factors such as birthdate and name popularity intersect with the sport’s global talent pool.
