The Carolina Hurricanes secured their first win of the 2026-27 NHL season with a 3-2 overtime road victory against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. The game, played at Philadelphia’s home rink, saw the Hurricanes continue a historic pattern of strong starts in away games.

Sebastian Aho played a pivotal role for Carolina, scoring both of the team’s regulation goals, including one just 10 seconds into the game. Aho also assisted on the overtime winner, highlighting his key contribution to the Hurricanes’ offense. Shayne Gostisbehere, a former Flyers defenseman, netted the decisive power-play goal at 2:51 of the extra period. His one-timer shot came from the top of the left circle, aided by a crucial screen set by Andrei Svechnikov, who disrupted the Flyers’ defense and obstructed goaltender Joseph Woll’s view.

Goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov made 16 saves to help secure the win for the defending Eastern Conference champions, who had begun the season with two losses. The victory extended Carolina’s streak of winning their road openers to nine consecutive seasons, a feat that ties the NHL record, previously set by Philadelphia from 1980 to 1988. Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour also made history by becoming the first coach to win nine straight road openers.

For the Flyers, Owen Tippett and Matvei Michkov each scored a goal. Philadelphia, swept by Carolina in last season’s Eastern Conference semifinals, remains winless after three games this campaign. Woll, the Flyers’ goaltender, faced 37 shots and made several key saves, but ultimately could not thwart the Hurricanes’ late attack.

Saturday’s game underscored the rivalry between the two teams and highlighted Carolina’s strong start away from home, while Philadelphia looks to rebound as it continues its early-season struggles.
