Manchester United manager Michael Carrick expressed confidence that his team can compete for trophies this season despite being significantly outspent by Premier League rivals in the recent transfer window. Speaking ahead of his side's upcoming match against Everton, Carrick acknowledged the financial gap but emphasized that success is not solely dependent on spending.
United invested approximately £155 million in rebuilding their midfield, signing Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos, and Youri Tielemans following the departures of Casemiro and the long-term injury to Manuel Ugarte. This spending, while substantial, was eclipsed by the league’s top clubs, with Manchester City breaking the British transfer record to acquire Enzo Fernandez for a fee close to United’s entire midfield budget, and Liverpool spending around £123 million on winger Bradley Barcola.
Despite these disparities, Carrick highlighted the importance of squad dynamics and getting the best out of the players available. “Money is one thing. What you do with it and how you make the most of it is another,” he said, noting that some teams are further along in their development, but stressed that his squad has the quality and drive to achieve positive results. Since taking over as manager in mid-January, Carrick has overseen an upturn in form, culminating in Manchester United securing third place in the Premier League and qualification for the Champions League for the first time in three years.
Carrick also addressed squad limitations, particularly in defense, where injuries have left United short, with Luke Shaw currently the only senior option at left-back. He acknowledged that no squad is perfect and that adapting to challenges is part of the process. Regarding forward Joshua Zirkzee, who attracted interest from several clubs including Fiorentina, Juventus, and Everton, Carrick said the player remains at Manchester United and is motivated to compete for more playing time.
“There’s a freshness and an excitement around the group,” Carrick said, adding that the team is moving in the right direction and showing hunger to achieve success. He praised the recent additions as positive reinforcements and expressed satisfaction with the work done during the transfer window, despite financial constraints.
With United preparing for a Champions League fixture against Sabah and continuing their Premier League campaign, Carrick's focus remains on fostering balance within the squad and extracting the best performance from his players as they aim to challenge for honors in a highly competitive season.
