Carson Benge made history for the New York Mets on Friday night by becoming the franchise’s first rookie to reach the 20-20 milestone, recording at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a single season. The 23-year-old outfielder hit his 20th home run in the fifth inning during the Mets’ 7-6 loss to the Washington Nationals.

While Benge may not be the leading candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year—Cincinnati’s Sal Stewart is widely regarded as the frontrunner—his breakout season has established him as a key player in the Mets’ future. Just last week, Benge surpassed Pete Alonso’s 2019 rookie record for most hits in a season, reaching 162. "Anything that can be in the history book and done for the first time is something special,” Benge said, reflecting on the achievement.

The Mets entered the series needing a sweep to avoid finishing last in the National League East, but Friday’s defeat extinguished that possibility. Manager Andy Green commented ahead of the game on the team’s standing: “If it matters to a Mets fan, it matters to me. But deep down, if I think about it, there’s playoffs, and there’s not playoffs, and there’s nothing we’re going to do to get to that spot.” He added that watching other teams advance to the postseason only strengthens the Mets’ resolve to return to a competitive level.

Saturday’s game could mark the final appearance for infielder Ronny Mauricio with the Mets. Once considered a promising prospect, the 25-year-old has struggled with injuries that limited his major league opportunities. In 18 games this season, Mauricio has posted a .454 on-base plus slugging (OPS) and spent substantial time on the injured list due to a thumb fracture, as well as missing the entire 2024 season following an ACL tear.

Green expressed optimism about Mauricio’s recovery and future potential despite the setbacks, noting the player’s return of athleticism and opportunity to forge a productive career if he can consistently contribute and improve plate discipline. Mauricio, who has spent much of the year at Triple-A Syracuse following rehab, is expected to be a candidate for non-tender this winter as he enters his first season of arbitration eligibility.

The Mets continue their final stretch of the season with limited playoff implications but highlight a rising talent in Benge as they look ahead.
