French Saint Martin is experiencing a resurgence in tourism, drawing increased interest not only from traditional East Coast American visitors but also a growing number of travelers from the West Coast. The island’s blend of European charm, culinary offerings, and natural beauty are cited as key factors attracting this diverse clientele.
Alexandra Chirlias, general manager of the Grand Case Beach Club resort, highlighted the island’s broad appeal, particularly among Californians. She noted that the destination provides a mix of adventure, wellness options, gastronomy, and a European cultural atmosphere that resonates with food enthusiasts and those seeking a well-rounded vacation experience. The island’s dual identity, with the Dutch side known for its nightlife and casinos and the French side favored for its quieter ambiance and high-end French cuisine, adds to its allure.
Saint Martin’s tourism industry has rebounded to pre-Hurricane Irma levels seen in 2016, supported by infrastructure improvements such as the rebuilding of Princess Juliana International Airport and expanded airline service. Chirlias reported positive results for Grand Case Beach Club, describing 2024 as the resort’s best year on record, with continued strong occupancy projected for 2025. This uptick is attributed not only to improved accessibility but also to the island’s reputation for friendliness and authenticity, which encourages repeat visits from American tourists who associate the destination with favorable past experiences.
Despite the growth in tourism and a move toward more upscale accommodations, the island has largely maintained its authentic character. Grand Case Beach Club, while enhancing its offerings, positions itself as providing "casual chic" rather than full luxury. The resort emphasizes a relaxed, home-like atmosphere, featuring suites with kitchens to accommodate guests’ needs for a comfortable and flexible stay. Its clientele is varied, including business travelers, families, couples on honeymoon or celebrating milestones, and guests who frequent the lively Dutch side but seek tranquility on the French side.
The resort occupies roughly a mile of beachfront, spanning Petite Plage and Grand Case beaches, with 74 suites overlooking the ocean or gardens. Facilities include a bar and lounge, an elegant café, a pool, and event spaces. Chirlias credited the resort’s distinguishing factor to its personalized, attentive service, noting that most staff members are local residents who cultivate relationships with returning guests and cater to their preferences.
In addition to accommodation, Grand Case Beach Club encourages visitors to engage with the broader Saint Martin community through customized itineraries, reinforcing the resort’s commitment to local integration and sustainable tourism. This approach recently earned the resort Green Globe certification, an international standard recognizing efforts in environmental responsibility.
Looking ahead, Chirlias affirmed that the resort plans to evolve with shifting market trends while maintaining its core philosophy of simplicity, authenticity, and high customer satisfaction.
