Chicago — The impact of catchers on a pitching staff extends far beyond traditional statistics, encompassing elements that are difficult to quantify such as game planning, pitch selection, and guiding pitchers through the course of a game. For the New York Yankees, catchers Austin Wells and Ali Sánchez have played a significant role in the team’s success on the mound this season, contributing to the Major League Baseball’s lowest team ERA at 3.40 as of late July.

Veteran Yankees pitchers Gerrit Cole and Max Fried emphasized the importance of Wells and Sánchez to the staff’s overall performance. Cole, who recorded six shutout innings against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, credited the catchers for their extensive preparation and ability to manage difficult situations on the field. “They deserve a lot of credit for the run prevention,” Cole said, highlighting the comprehensive work the catchers put in behind the scenes.

Similarly, Fried underscored the demanding nature of the catcher’s role, particularly in today’s game where studying opposing hitters and tailoring strategies to individual pitchers is crucial. “We put a lot of emphasis on game planning and making sure that we’re really prepared. They’ve been doing a really great job,” Fried said, connecting the team’s pitching success to the catchers’ efforts.

Despite the value Wells and Sánchez bring defensively, the Yankees face challenges offensively from the catcher position. Wells, in particular, has struggled at the plate this season, posting a batting average of .162 and a .534 OPS as of Wednesday. While he showed improvement over recent games, the Yankees are actively exploring upgrade options ahead of the trade deadline. Sánchez, a right-handed hitter with a smaller sample size, has demonstrated promise against left-handed pitching, batting .333 with an .876 OPS in limited appearances.

Trade discussions are ongoing, with the Minnesota Twins’ Ryan Jeffers frequently mentioned as a potential target due to his framing skills and previous connections to the Yankees’ catching director, Tanner Swanson. However, the Twins have expressed plans to remain competitive, leaving uncertainty over Jeffers’ availability. Other names linked to the Yankees include Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, known more for his offense, and Baltimore Orioles switch-hitter Adley Rutschman, a highly regarded defensive catcher currently sidelined with wrist inflammation.

While seeking offensive improvements, the Yankees are mindful of preserving the chemistry and effectiveness of their pitching staff’s core. The strong relationship between the rotation and their catchers forms a key component of the team’s strategy for sustained success into the postseason.

Cole summed up the dual demands of the catcher position, praising Wells and Sánchez for their resilience: “It’s physically challenging, mentally challenging as well, playing both sides of the ball. So we like to love on those guys as much as we can.”
