Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs expressed optimism following his return to action as the club advances its preparations for the 2026/27 season. The Dutch international, who recently represented the Netherlands at the World Cup, played 60 minutes in a recent pre-season match, during which he maintained a clean sheet.

“It’s good to be back with the boys,” Roefs said, reflecting on his return to training and match play after arriving last week. He noted the positive atmosphere within the squad, emphasizing the strong camaraderie under manager Régis Le Bris. “It’s a good environment and everyone is so good with each other – we’re enjoying our time together,” Roefs added. “Off the pitch it’s fun, but on the pitch, we really work hard together and push each other.”

As the team nears the end of its pre-season schedule, Roefs expressed eagerness to build on last season’s achievements. “We can’t wait for the season to start now,” he said. “After finishing last season like we did, we can’t wait to be back out there.”

Sunderland’s pre-season tour in the United States drew significant support from fans abroad, an enthusiasm the goalkeeper acknowledged with appreciation. “The support in the US was amazing, but it doesn’t surprise me,” Roefs said. “We really feel that during the season and it’s even more crazy to see so many over here. It’s an honour to play for them.”

The Black Cats are scheduled to conclude their pre-season campaign with an away match against Ligue 1 side RC Lens at Stade Bollaert-Delelis this weekend.
