Cleveland High’s football team continues its unbeaten streak with a 7-0 record, demonstrating a blend of strong leadership, player dedication, and disciplined teamwork under coach Mario Guzman. The Cavaliers recently secured a 14-9 victory over longtime City Section contender Birmingham, a win that underscored their growing reputation as a rising power in the league.

Backup quarterback Julio Avalos, who stepped in for the injured starter Domenik Fuentes, was instrumental in the win against Birmingham. Avalos, typically a receiver, said he stayed up until 4 a.m. studying film after the game, exemplifying the team’s commitment. Guzman’s preparation this season ensured that the team was never caught off guard by injuries, a lesson learned after last year’s challenges when Fuentes was sidelined before the playoffs.

Cleveland’s offensive approach focuses on a power-running game, bolstered by a robust offensive line that shares a close-knit camaraderie, often eating lunch together and hosting weekly pasta dinners to build team unity. Their multi-faceted backfield is led by running back Moyosoreoluwa Odebunmi, while the defense features standout middle linebacker Joseph Hurtado, noted by Birmingham coach Jim Rose for his tackling ability.

The team’s success is particularly notable given the broader context of City Section football, which has seen the departure of several historic coaching figures in recent years. At 34, Guzman’s breakthrough season recalls those achieved by younger coaches like Troy Starr, who led Taft to a City 3-A final in 1992 after a prior winless season. If Cleveland continues its winning streak and claims the West Valley League title, it is poised to earn the No. 2 seed behind defending champion Carson in the City Section Open Division playoffs, despite the school’s usual absence from the Open Division.

Guzman, in his third year as head coach, brings a blend of experience and educational background, having been an assistant under former coach Peter Gunny and holding a teaching credential earned through studies at Valley College, Cal State Northridge, and National University. His commitment extends beyond the field; he embodies discipline and integrity, enforcing team standards such as appropriate workout attire and ensuring players maintain focus during practice. Notably, Guzman remains the last adult at the school after games, waiting late into the night to ensure every player leaves safely while adhering to school district policies that prohibit giving players rides home.

The coach’s influence resonates beyond athletics. Players like Oluwafemi Okelola emphasize Guzman’s genuine care, noting that he checks on them personally and inspires them to exceed expectations. Guzman’s wife, Elizabeth, contributes to the program by assisting with team meals during preseason, further supporting the tight-knit culture that defines the Cavaliers this season.

Cleveland’s mix of disciplined coaching, player buy-in, and strategic preparation has propelled them into contention as a serious force in the City Section, with their unbeaten run marking a significant chapter in the school’s football history.
