Bhadra Kali Productions, a distinguished name in Marathi theatre, recently marked its 44th anniversary with the staging of its 60th play, "Sanga Kasa Jagaycha?" The theatre company, founded by the late Malvani actor Machhindranath Kambli, has played a significant role in enriching the Marathi stage with over fifty productions since its inception.
The journey of Bhadra Kali Productions began out of a passion for the Malvani language and culture, spearheaded by Kambli, who transitioned from acting and stage management roles in other groups to establishing this dedicated theatre company. The company’s first production, "Chakarmani," debuted on July 27, 1982, at the Ravindra Natya Mandir in Mumbai, focusing on the life of a Konkani family grappling with the realities of migrant remittances. This work set the tone for the company’s commitment to addressing social issues through theatre.
One of the hallmark plays associated with Bhadra Kali is "Vastraharan," first performed in 1980 under the banner of Om Natya Gandha, where Kambli played a key role. After forming Bhadra Kali, Kambli revived the play, which has since been performed over 5,335 times, with Kambli himself acting in approximately 4,923 shows. The production remains one of Marathi theatre’s longest-running successes.
Throughout its history, Bhadra Kali has consistently engaged with contemporary social themes, often highlighting the challenges faced by the Malvani and Konkani communities. Productions like Ratnakar Matkari’s "Agnanidivya," which explores the societal issue of dowry, "Malvani Saubhadra," and plays focusing on topics such as surrogacy, crime, and HIV/AIDS have been milestones in the company’s repertoire. The play "Bhayya Hatapay Pasari," which reflected on the experiences of Mumbai’s migrant communities, was reportedly the final production before Kambli’s passing in 2007.
Following Kambli’s death, his son Prasad Kambli took over leadership of Bhadra Kali, initially planning to conclude the company’s journey after completing all performances of "Bhayya..." However, the company continued to stage productions, with actor Mangesh Kadam stepping into leading roles. The company also resumed performances of "Vastraharan," reaching its 5,000th show in 2009 at the Shanmukhanand Hall, an event marked by significant ticket demand.
Bhadra Kali has also been a launching platform for many notable Marathi actors, including Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Sunil Barve, and Atul Parchure, who began their careers under its banner. Alongside nurturing talent, the company has supportively promoted new playwrights, directors, and musicians, contributing broadly to the Marathi theatrical landscape.
In recent years, Bhadra Kali’s productions have continued to draw large audiences, exemplified by the 2017 play "Sangeet Devbabhali," which completed 290 shows, 170 of which sold out in advance. The company’s ongoing commitment to Marathi theatre remains evident with the recent staging of "Sanga Kasa Jagaycha?," underscoring a continuous legacy of over 18,000 performances to date. As Bhadra Kali marks more than four decades on stage, it continues contributing significantly to the cultural fabric of Marathi theatre, sustaining its mission to engage audiences through socially relevant and artistically rich productions.
