The BBC One series Celebrity Traitors has seen a surge in viewership following a dramatic episode in which journalist Amol Rajan was eliminated from the competition. The episode, which aired recently, featured Maya Jama and Richard E Grant—both designated Traitors—working together to vote Rajan out. Rajan, who was the first contestant to be removed, described Jama as a “satanic villain” for her role in the decision.
Jama, 32, expressed regret over recruiting comedian James Acaster and Professor Hannah Fry to the Traitors’ group, both of whom had preferred to remain Faithfuls. She stated that she was unaware of their reluctance at the time of recruitment, adding that her perspective inside the castle was more limited than what viewers see on television. Tensions between the players escalated as Jama confronted Acaster and Fry for their hesitation to eliminate former allies, urging them to adopt a more ruthless approach appropriate to the Traitors’ role.
Rajan, 43, suggested that in the evolving dynamics of the game, contestants with lower profiles may have a strategic advantage over more outspoken personalities. He cited the removal of Richard E Grant, whom he described as a “lord of chaos,” as evidence that dominant personalities face greater risks in the competition.
The episode featuring Rajan’s departure attracted 8.6 million viewers on its initial broadcast, with catch-up figures pushing the total to approximately 13.8 million. The series’ premiere episode similarly saw an increase from 9 million live viewers to 14.4 million within a week.
Following the recent developments, bookmaker Ladbrokes shortened Maya Jama’s odds of winning from 10/1 to 4/1. Meanwhile, influencer King Kenny and actor Sharon Rooney are tied as joint favorites at 3/1. The show’s blend of strategic gameplay and interpersonal drama continues to draw a substantial audience.
