Los Angeles residents now have access to two modernized public aquatic centers offering year-round swimming facilities designed to meet diverse community needs.
The Celes King III Pool, located within the Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex at 5001 Obama Boulevard, was newly built in 2022 to replace the original pool dating back to 1962. The facility features a T-shaped indoor pool measuring approximately 56 by 75 feet on one side and 35 by 105 feet on the other. It includes seven swim lanes categorized for slow, medium, and fast swimmers. The pool’s depth ranges from 3.5 feet to 12.25 feet in the diving well. Visitors benefit from ample natural light thanks to numerous windows and high ceilings, as well as modern locker rooms.
This pool hosts a variety of programs including AquaFit Cardio classes, which draw crowds especially on weeknights. A recreational swimming area, diving board, and basketball hoop complement lap swimming. Youth are also engaged through diving, artistic swimming, water polo teams, and a junior lifeguard program. Events sometimes incorporate activities such as kayaking. Admission is free for children under 3, while adults ages 18 to 49 pay $4 and youth, seniors, and individuals with disabilities pay $1. The pool is open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 1 to 4:50 p.m., with free parking available onsite.
The Algin Sutton Pool, part of the Algin Sutton Recreation Center at 8800 S. Hoover Street, underwent a major renovation completed in 2021. The new pool measures 75 by 120 feet with eight lanes and an adjacent splash pad, surrounded by refreshed landscaping that includes palm trees and bright colors. A white metal canopy with a design reminiscent of airplane wings acknowledges its proximity to Los Angeles International Airport. The pool’s depth ranges from 2.5 feet to 8 feet, with a diving well at 12 feet.
Like Celes King III, the Algin Sutton Pool is heated and open year-round, providing swim classes and youth programs encompassing water polo, artistic swimming, and diving, alongside junior lifeguard training. The facility’s hours are typically weekdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends from 1 to 5 p.m., with parking available free of charge. Admission fees follow the same structure as the Celes King III Pool.
Both pools operate on a pay-as-you-go basis with cash only and encourage visitors to carry exact change. These renovated centers serve as vibrant community hubs that promote aquatic fitness and recreation among Los Angeles residents.
