In the 2023 NBA draft, the Boston Celtics selected forward Dillon Mitchell with the 40th overall pick, nearly four years after first scouting him. Celtics vice president of basketball operations Mike Zarren initially noticed Mitchell during a November 2022 game between Texas and Gonzaga while on a scouting trip to Texas. At the time, the freshman showcased notable athleticism and leaping ability, though he was still considered raw in his development.

Mitchell began his college career at Texas, where he played two seasons before transferring to Cincinnati for his junior year. He completed his senior season at St. John’s University under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, a move that Zarren credited with helping Mitchell find greater purpose and growth in his game. During his final college season, Mitchell emerged as one of the strongest perimeter defenders in the nation, earning a spot on the Big East All-Defensive team.

Throughout his senior year at St. John’s, Mitchell averaged 8.3 points and seven rebounds per game. Despite his defensive prowess and athletic ability, his offensive game remains a work in progress. He struggled with long-range shooting, converting only 1 of 15 attempts from beyond the arc last season. However, the Celtics see potential in his passing and overall movement on offense, areas where they noted considerable improvement during his time with Pitino.

Zarren emphasized Mitchell’s combination of size, mobility, and defensive instincts as key attributes that make him a promising prospect. While acknowledging that Mitchell still has development ahead, the Celtics are optimistic about his future contributions to the team and believe his athleticism could translate well to the NBA level with further refinement.
