A couple celebrated a memorable moment at Wimbledon’s Centre Court on Friday when Jonathan Clement proposed to Juliet Berner just before Novak Djokovic’s third-round match. Clement, 39, an energy consultant, and Berner, 38, an English tutor and former NHS doctor, met approximately 10 months ago while playing padel, a sport Jonathan coaches. The couple currently reside in the Algarve region of Portugal.
The proposal took place moments before Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, faced France’s Arthur Rinderknech. After Clement popped the question, the crowd responded with enthusiastic applause. Berner, who grew up near Wimbledon in Southfields, described the proposal as a complete surprise, having expected it to come later in the summer. Clement called the moment “the easiest decision” of his life and referred to Centre Court as the “holy grail,” noting that his mother was also engaged on the same court 21 years earlier.
The couple plans to hold their wedding in Oxford, incorporating “a touch of Wimbledon” into their celebration. They extended a warm invitation to Djokovic, who ultimately won the match in four sets. The proposal marked the second time in the week that a Djokovic match was briefly interrupted by a marriage proposal.
Wimbledon on Friday attracted numerous notable figures, including musician Sir Cliff Richard, former football managers Steven Gerrard and Roy Hodgson, comedian Rob Brydon, physicist Professor Brian Cox, and Olympians Dame Denise Lewis and Usain Bolt, all of whom were present to witness the ongoing tournament.
