Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has indicated his intention to seek a second term in office, with a formal announcement expected before his current term expires on May 21. Speaking ahead of the end of his tenure, Chadchart emphasized a measured approach, noting that while he has prepared policy proposals for a potential new term, his immediate focus remains on fulfilling his current duties.
Chadchart, who won the 2022 gubernatorial election by a wide margin with over 1.38 million votes, stressed his preference to run as an independent candidate. He cited the flexibility afforded by nonpartisan status, allowing him to collaborate across political lines within the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. He also urged voters to support competent and transparent council members, underscoring the importance of effective cooperation between the governor and the Bangkok Metropolitan Council for efficient governance.
The upcoming gubernatorial election will see candidate registrations take place from May 28 to June 1, with voting scheduled for June 23. Political analysts note that no clear challengers have emerged to rival Chadchart’s popularity. While several individuals have expressed interest in running as independents, attention has turned to the People’s Party (PP), which gained significant support in Bangkok during the previous general election. PP deputy leader Sirikanya Tansakul indicated that the party will announce its candidate following the Songkran holiday. Meanwhile, the Pheu Thai Party is reportedly considering not fielding a candidate in the race, a move that could maintain an informal understanding with Chadchart.
Analysts suggest that Chadchart’s main challenge may come from public assessment of his record during his first term, rather than from other contenders. In addition to election matters, Chadchart highlighted the success of this year’s Songkran festival, particularly in areas like Silom Road, which attracted roughly 700,000 visitors over the three-day holiday from April 12 to 14. He announced plans to elevate the festival’s profile internationally by enhancing infrastructure, pedestrian connectivity, waste management, and safety measures, including potential expansion of skywalks to better accommodate attendees.
