Dr. Ali bin Fetais al-Marri, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC), conducted a series of meetings in Montevideo with key Uruguayan officials, including Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin, Intendant of Montevideo Mario Bergara, and Mayor of Punta del Este Javier Carballal. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between ROLACC and Uruguay to bolster regional and international efforts against corruption.

The engagements come amid Uruguay’s prominent role in various regional and international organizations. In 2026, Uruguay holds the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China, a coalition representing developing nations, as well as the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), which includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Additionally, Uruguay is currently chairing the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), an organization comprising 33 countries across the region.

The meetings emphasized the shared commitment to advancing the rule of law and implementing anti-corruption measures in Latin America. Both sides explored avenues to strengthen collaborative frameworks that address governance challenges and promote transparency within the member states of these regional bodies.

These discussions underscore the increasing focus on multilateral cooperation to tackle corruption, which remains a significant obstacle to social and economic development in many countries globally. By aligning efforts through established regional platforms, ROLACC and Uruguay aim to facilitate knowledge exchange, capacity-building, and coordinated policy implementation to curb corrupt practices effectively.

The talks further reflected Uruguay’s strategic position in Latin American diplomacy, leveraging its leadership roles to promote legal integrity and anti-corruption initiatives at both the regional and international levels. ROLACC’s engagement with Uruguayan authorities highlights the growing intersection between civil society organizations and governmental actors in addressing systemic governance issues.
