This summer’s hot and dry conditions have posed significant challenges for fruit growers in southern England, with many trees experiencing poor yields and premature fruit drop. While apple and quince trees have produced limited or no fruit, some plum trees have yielded heavy crops despite difficult environmental factors.
One gardener reported that a Victoria plum tree near their greenhouse bore such a heavy load that several branches broke under the weight. However, while the plums appeared healthy from a distance, closer examination revealed an infestation by the plum fruit moth (Grapholita funebrana), a species common to the region.
The damage caused by the moth’s larvae was initially unnoticed, as the fruits looked largely intact except for subtle misshaping and small droplets of sticky sap on the skin. This sap secretion, known as gummosis, is a defensive response triggered when the caterpillars bore into the fruit’s skin. The adult moth lays individual eggs on developing plums during mid-summer. Upon hatching, the creamy-white larvae with brown heads tunnel into the fruit to feed on the flesh surrounding the stone. As they grow, their bodies develop a distinctive pink coloration.
The gardener described discovering the infestation after biting into several plums and encountering an unpleasant gritty texture and bitter taste. Upon cutting open the fruit, they found the larvae inside, along with frass—caterpillar excrement—indicating an active infestation. To break the lifecycle of the pest, experts recommend removing all fallen and damaged plums from the vicinity of the tree and disposing of them far away to prevent the larvae from pupating and emerging as adult moths.
The gardener salvaged unaffected fruit for jam making while discarding infested remnants in a compost bin, only to find the caterpillars had migrated out of the fruit and onto the bin lid the following day. This underscores the difficulty in managing plum fruit moth populations and the importance of vigilant monitoring and fruit disposal practices to protect autumn fruit crops in the region.
