Champion jockey Zac Purton, a prominent figure in Hong Kong racing, is contemplating the future of his riding career but has not set a definitive retirement date. The 43-year-old Australian, who has been based in Hong Kong for nearly 20 years, acknowledged the persistent question about when he plans to stop riding.
At one point, Purton considered retiring around the age of 40 due to a persistent hip injury, which also prompted thoughts of returning to Australia. However, the unexpected departure of fellow top jockey Joao Moreira from Hong Kong racing and the encouragement of his wife, Nicole, persuaded him to extend his career. Following that decision, Purton achieved a career milestone by breaking the record for the most wins in a single Hong Kong season, finishing with 179 victories and maintaining a strike rate of about 24 to 25 percent.
A key factor in Purton’s ongoing commitment to racing is his partnership with Ka Ying Rising, regarded as one of the best sprinters globally. Despite a recent upset loss in defending his title in the TAB Everest, where the horse Tempted secured the win, Purton remains optimistic about Ka Ying Rising’s prospects. The horse is expected to return in 2027 with ambitions to regain its crown, which could influence Purton’s own plans.
Purton indicated that although many expect him to retire when Ka Ying Rising eventually steps down, he prefers to keep his options open and will assess his future based on how he feels at that time. He emphasized the uncertainty, stating he will "work it out" when the moment arises.
Regarding a potential full-time return to Australia before retirement, Purton described the idea as appealing yet challenging. He explained that re-establishing stable relationships and navigating the Australian racing circuit would require significant effort, which he does not want to undertake at this stage. Instead, Purton intends to continue making strategic, short-term returns to Australian racing when opportunities arise, often guided by connections with leading trainer Chris Waller.
Purton’s status as a leading jockey in Hong Kong, combined with his enduring partnership with Ka Ying Rising, suggests he remains motivated to compete at the highest level for the foreseeable future.
