Auckland FC is embracing a youth-focused approach as it prepares for the upcoming A-League season, following a period of significant change within the club. The defending champions have appointed Portuguese coach Pedro Moreira, succeeding Steve Corica, and have overhauled their playing roster, seeing several key players depart.

Notable fan favourites, including Jesse Randall, Guillermo May, Dan Hall, Liam Gillion, Jake Girdwood-Reich, and Louis Verstraete, have moved on, making way for a younger generation of players. Among the new signings, defender Aaron Calver stands out as the most experienced addition, while the majority of recruits are in their early twenties or younger. The oldest new player after Calver is Ronan Wynne, who is 25 years old, with the squad also featuring two teenagers alongside homegrown talents Luka Vicelich and Van Fitzharris, both promoted to the first team last season.

One of the teenage recruits is 18-year-old forward Aaron Cartwright, who joined Auckland FC on a scholarship from Melbourne City FC. Cartwright brought with him experience from Australia’s Australia Cup but highlighted the prospect of consistent playing time as a key motivation for his move. “At Melbourne, I was in and around the first team, but then I got an offer here to come play on my first pro contract and that was something I couldn’t turn down,” he said.

Cartwright praised Moreira’s coaching, describing the new head coach as supportive and constructive in providing feedback to help improve his game. He also credited defender Francis de Vries for being especially welcoming and helpful in integrating him into the squad, noting the camaraderie among the players.

Terry McFlynn, Auckland FC’s director of football, emphasized the club’s commitment to fostering young talent. He pointed out that last season’s squad included several emerging players, such as Randall and Girdwood-Reich, and said that the club remains dedicated to providing opportunities for young New Zealand players to develop in professional football. “If the players are good enough, they’ll go play. We want to give young Kiwi boys opportunities into professional football, and I think we’ll continue to do that in the off-season with the players we’ve brought in,” McFlynn stated.

McFlynn also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the young players during pre-season. Wynne has participated in multiple matches, while Vicelich and Fitzharris have performed strongly before representing Samoa at the Under-20 World Cup alongside Cartwright, who has also earned qualification for the tournament.

Auckland FC will open their new campaign at Go Media Stadium on October 17, hosting Melbourne City in a 5 p.m. kickoff. The club’s blend of youthful talent and new leadership aims to build on their championship success as they seek to maintain their status in the A-League.
