A two-part documentary airing on Channel 4 will examine a major scandal involving Robert Bush, the former owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. Bush was sentenced to 20 years in prison in July 2026 after admitting to 67 offences related to the mishandling of bodies and ashes over a period of 12 years, impacting more than 300 bereaved families.

The investigation, initiated by Humberside Police in March 2024, uncovered 35 bodies in various stages of decomposition at Bush’s funeral premises, as well as more than 100 sets of ashes that were wrongly attributed. Authorities described the case as a profound breach of trust within the funeral industry.

Produced by Brinkworth Productions, the documentary titled The Body Thief provides exclusive insight into the police probe as well as personal accounts from the affected families. It explores the scale and nature of the wrongdoing and the emotional toll on those seeking closure after losing loved ones.

Anna Miralis, Channel 4’s commissioning editor, characterized the case as one of the most distressing criminal incidents in recent British history. Executive producer Lorna-Dawn Creanor expressed hope that the film would prompt discussions about the need for tighter regulation of funeral services, helping to prevent similar abuses in the future.

The programme seeks to amplify the voices of the families impacted by Bush’s actions while recognizing the dedication of investigators who worked to uncover and address the violations. It aims to shed light on gaps within the funeral industry and the consequences of insufficient oversight.
