Tuipulotu, the 54th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, participated fully during minicamp but was seen on the practice field in general workout gear rather than his usual helmet and pads during Wednesday’s session. On Thursday, he joined defensive drills in full uniform but refrained from team-oriented practice activities, signaling a hold-in approach — a tactic by which players fulfill minimum obligations under the collective bargaining agreement to avoid fines, while holding out leverage in contract talks.
The Chargers’ defensive staff have acknowledged Tuipulotu’s absence on the practice field but emphasized their continued preparations. Defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary described efforts to adapt team planning around the edge rusher’s limited availability, recognizing Tuipulotu’s vocal presence and impact on the defensive line.
Tuipulotu has emerged as a significant contributor for the Chargers defense, building on a strong 2025 season where he recorded 13 sacks. Over 36 career starts, he has tallied 26 sacks and 144 tackles, securing his role as a defensive playmaker under the former coordinator Jesse Minter’s system that bolstered the team’s defensive rankings.
The player has remained measured about the ongoing contract process, saying during minicamp that he has entrusted his agents to handle negotiations while focusing on maintaining rapport with teammates. Fellow Chargers safety Derwin James, who similarly held out during contract talks four years ago before signing lucrative deals, expressed support for Tuipulotu, framing the situation as a routine phase in professional sports negotiations.
Veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack, a mentor for Tuipulotu, has also weighed in privately, offering guidance based on his own experiences with contract disputes and holdouts. Mack remarked on the importance of managing both on-field performance and off-field business matters, noting that each situation is unique but expressing hope that a resolution beneficial to both Tuipulotu and the Chargers would be reached.
Tuipulotu has not provided a specific timeline for the conclusion of talks but emphasized his commitment to rejoining the team fully once an agreement is in place. The Chargers, meanwhile, acknowledge the value of his presence not only for his defensive skills but also for the energy and leadership he brings during practice sessions.
“There’s always something to get better at,” Tuipulotu said. “There’s always something you miss. Man, I love practice. I bring the juice during practice.” As the team moves forward without his full participation, it remains clear that both Tuipulotu and the Chargers are working toward an eventual resolution.
