After a year marked by setbacks and delays, Sovereignty confirmed his status among the elite racehorses of his generation with a commanding victory in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky, on Saturday. The four-year-old colt overcame a fever that sidelined him from last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar and a foot abscess less than two months ago to deliver a dominant performance.
Ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty surged ahead on the far turn, overtaking stablemate Knightsbridge before pulling away to win by 1 3/4 lengths over The Puma. Knightsbridge finished third, while two Japanese contenders, T O Password and the favorite Forever Young, placed fourth and fifth respectively. Notably, Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo came in sixth, and Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo finished seventh, last in the field.
Forever Young’s failure to win contributed to a disappointing day for California-based horses at this year’s Breeders’ Cup, marking the second time in four years that they left the event without a Classic victory. Sovereignty, meanwhile, secured a milestone for Godolphin Stable, owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai, delivering the first-ever wins for the operation in both the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Sovereignty’s winning time for the 1 1/4-mile race was a swift 2 minutes, 0.36 seconds. As the second betting choice at 19-10 odds, he paid $5.94, earning $3.64 million from the race. The victory increased his career earnings to more than $10.5 million.
Despite his triumph, it is unlikely that Sovereignty will return to compete for a second Classic title, which would have positioned him alongside Tiznow as the only horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic twice. Tiznow achieved the feat in 2000 and 2001. With the prospect of Sovereignty retiring to stud, he is expected to be named Horse of the Year for the second consecutive season, solidifying his legacy as one of the sport’s premier talents.
