A charity ball held recently paid tribute to the legacy of Dame Deborah, whose battle with cancer inspired the creation of the Bowelbabe Fund to support cancer research. The event, envisioned by Dame Deborah herself, aimed to raise funds to advance treatments that prolonged her life and bring hope to others facing similar struggles.
The family organized the fundraising gala to fulfill Dame Deborah’s wish for a “big glamorous ball” where loved ones could gather and contribute to a cause close to her heart. Seb Bowen, her widowed husband, emphasized the significance of realizing her dream: “A room full of people she loved, all dressed up, raising money for something that mattered. She never got the chance, so we decided to do it for her.”
The fund has seen remarkable growth since its inception. By June 28, donations had nearly reached £10 million. As of the time of the ball, that total had more than doubled to over £21 million.
Dame Deborah’s children spoke candidly about their loss and their hopes for others. Eloise, her daughter, expressed the emotional impact of her mother’s passing and the motivation behind continuing the fundraising efforts. “I can’t bring my mum back. But maybe, just maybe, I can help make sure another child gets to have their mum at their 17th birthday, to call their mum after their first heartbreak. Maybe another woman gets more time,” she said. She added that while she cannot change her own experience with cancer, the family can help improve outcomes for others.
The event also reflected on Dame Deborah’s encounter with Prince William, who visited the family in her final weeks to present her damehood. Although the Prince of Wales was unable to attend the ball, he sent a message recalling their meeting in 2022 at her parents’ home. He praised her “incredible achievements” and “desire to leave a lasting legacy” through the fund. He described her positivity and humor amid adversity, referring to her attitude as “rebellious hope.” The Prince noted that the ball coincided with what would have been her 45th birthday, encouraging guests to celebrate in her memory.
Entertainment was provided by pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor and DJ Zoe Hardman, who energized the dance floor, helping create an atmosphere of celebration amid remembrance.
The evening was a family affair, with Dame Deborah’s parents Alistair and Heather, along with Eloise and her brother Hugo, attending to honor her memory. Hugo recalled his mother’s bravery, saying she expressed regret at not being able to keep fighting but left behind a lasting legacy. Eloise reflected on the personal loss, noting the lasting void of not having her mother for future milestones.
The charity ball not only raised substantial funds but also served as a poignant reminder of the resilience and hope inspired by Dame Deborah’s life and mission.
