The Newmarket-based handler had struggled with a winless spell through most of the summer, including at several major racing festivals, but has now regained momentum as the autumn racing season unfolds.

Appleby is aiming to maintain this strong run at Newmarket in the coming days, with several notable entries poised for the week’s key races. On Friday, he plans to run Talk Of New York and Distant Storm in the Joel Stakes, contingent on the ground remaining firm. Another of his charges, Fortitudine—a brother to multiple Group 1 winner Rebel’s Romance—is also under consideration for the Godolphin Stakes on the same card. Appleby commented on Fortitudine’s progress, saying the colt is advancing rapidly and has earned the opportunity to compete at this level.

The weekend at Newmarket will also feature promising juveniles from Appleby’s stable. First Law, who remains unbeaten, is a leading candidate for the Royal Lodge Stakes, although the trainer noted the colt’s participation may depend on ground conditions, particularly if the going is too fast. Inner City Blues is set to compete in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, with Appleby expressing confidence following a strong recent workout. The colt has not raced since the July Stakes but is expected to deliver a competitive performance.

Appleby, 51, has highlighted the importance of ground conditions in his entries’ chances, indicating a cautious approach to selecting races based on the going. His recent run of success marks a sharp contrast to a summer period where victories were in short supply, signaling a renewed phase of competitive form for the Newmarket stable.
