Christchurch has secured approximately NZ$2.65 million from the New Zealand Government’s $10 million events boost fund, positioning the city among the top recipients intended to attract international visitors through a range of concerts, festivals, fashion, and sporting events.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) released the funding allocations, revealing that Christchurch will host six events or event packages supported by the fund. The largest single allocation of $750,000 is earmarked for the “Once in a Lifetime” event featuring SIX60 and the Synthony orchestra at the city’s newly opened stadium. Additionally, the city received $500,000 each for two seasonal marketing campaigns: Autumn Super Season 2026 and ON SHOW – Spring.

A further $250,000 was allocated to a package that includes NZ Fashion Week 2026 and the Christchurch Spring Fashion Festival. Christchurch is also one of three host cities for the Black Ferns WXV series rugby tournament against France, along with Whangārei and Hamilton; the multi-city tournament received a total of $375,000. Moreover, the city will share a portion of $275,000 in funding for hosting performances of the international touring musical & Juliet at the Isaac Theatre Royal, alongside Auckland and Wellington.

The events boost fund was introduced as a one-off initiative aimed at elevating international visitor numbers and driving economic activity by enhancing the profile and delivery of events running through the end of 2026. The funding is intended to complement rather than replace existing council event investments, focusing on international marketing and content development.

This fund operates alongside two other government initiatives supporting events: the major events fund, which is providing backing for Robbie Williams concerts in Christchurch and Wellington later this year, and the events attraction package, both designed to further stimulate tourism and economic gains through high-profile cultural and sporting occasions.
