Scottish researchers have partnered with an agricultural firm to develop a method for converting cheese production waste into biofuel. The collaboration between scientists at Heriot-Watt University and Take Root Bio focuses on transforming salty whey, a by-product generated in large quantities during cheese manufacturing, into bioethanol, a widely used renewable fuel.

Whey, noted for its high salt content, poses significant challenges in terms of disposal for dairy producers, who can produce tens of thousands of liters of the substance weekly. Managing this waste not only incurs costs but also raises environmental concerns.

Kirk Siderman-Wolter of Take Root Bio emphasized the project's goal of reimagining waste as a valuable resource. “We’re interested in what happens when you stop looking at something as waste and start asking what else it could become,” he said. By converting whey into bioethanol, the initiative aims to create economic benefits for dairy producers while reducing environmental impacts associated with waste management.

This approach aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable biofuel production by utilizing industrial by-products, potentially offering a dual benefit of waste reduction and renewable energy generation. Researchers involved note that turning a costly waste material into a marketable fuel could represent a positive shift for both the dairy industry and environmental stewardship.
