Chelmsford City Racecourse in Essex is set to resume operations after Arena Racing Company (ARC) reached an agreement to take over the venue. The racecourse has been closed since April following the bankruptcy of its previous license holders.

In the interim, the former owners sought to regain control by applying for a new license under a different company name, but this application was denied by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA).

ARC’s intervention offers a path forward for the venue, which plays a significant role in the regional racing schedule. Martin Cruddace, ARC’s chief executive, emphasized the importance of Chelmsford City to the racing calendar and expressed optimism about the deal.

“Racing at Chelmsford City racecourse is hugely important to the fixture list and we’re therefore delighted to work with the freeholders to reach agreement that will allow racing to return to the venue,” Cruddace said. He added that discussions with the BHA are ongoing to secure the necessary licenses to restart racing activities as soon as possible.

The agreement between ARC and the racecourse freeholders marks a critical development for the local racing community, which had faced uncertainty since the closure earlier this year. Details regarding a precise timeline for the resumption of events have not yet been announced.
