Chelmsford secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Canvey Island in the FA Cup tie on Saturday, thanks to a late goal from Jack Barham. The match, played at Canvey Island’s home ground in the Pitching In Isthmian North Division, saw Chelmsford, who compete two tiers higher in the National League South, face unexpected resistance from their hosts.

Barham’s strike came 19 minutes from time, breaking the deadlock in a tightly contested fixture that could have ended in an upset. Despite Chelmsford’s higher league standing, Canvey Island pushed their opponents throughout the match, with goalkeeper David Hughes delivering a standout performance that earned praise from Chelmsford manager Mark Cooper. Cooper described Hughes as “incredible” and suggested the goalkeeper deserved attention from higher-level clubs following his efforts.

The game featured early chances for Chelmsford, with striker Lyle Taylor testing Hughes after intercepting a loose ball.
