Chelsea Football Club has secured the signing of forward Rogers, marking one of the most significant acquisitions since the arrival of owners BlueCo four years ago. The player, who recently helped England secure a third-place finish at the World Cup in the United States, joins the London club following a rapid rise in form at Aston Villa.
Rogers played a key role for England, starting in the semifinal against Argentina and featuring in the 6-4 victory over France that secured the bronze medal. Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, he expressed enthusiasm about the move, calling Chelsea "the biggest club in London" and praising the club’s direction under the new manager. He emphasized his eagerness to begin the next chapter of his career with the Blues.
The versatile forward, who can operate across multiple attacking positions, initially joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024. He made a significant impact at Villa Park last season, scoring 31 goals in 125 appearances under manager Unai Emery and helping the team secure a top-four finish and qualification for the Europa League. His transfer reflects Chelsea’s shifting recruitment strategy, moving away from their previous focus on young, untested players toward acquiring more experienced talents capable of competing at the highest level.
The signing aligns with comments from Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali, who indicated after a disappointing 2023-24 season that the club was seeking players who could immediately boost their title ambitions. Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League that campaign and suffered a heavy Champions League round-of-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The appointment of former Real Madrid midfielder and two-time Champions League winner Alonso as manager was partly intended to attract high-caliber players like Rogers.
Rogers’ arrival is Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer, following defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda. Earlier this summer, the club made an unsuccessful attempt to sign Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka but could not meet the asking price for the 33-year-old midfielder.
With Rogers now on board, Chelsea appear intent on strengthening their squad to challenge more effectively for domestic and European honors in the upcoming season.
