Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that forward Estevao will not be sent out on loan during the January transfer window, despite limited playing time for the 19-year-old this season. Estevao, signed from Palmeiras in a deal that could reach £55 million and runs into the 2030s, has yet to feature significantly under Alonso’s management, prompting speculation about his role and future at the club.
Estevao has been mostly restricted to substitute appearances in the Premier League, with six late cameos and two matches unused on the bench. He did not enter the field in Chelsea’s recent Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, which has raised questions over Alonso’s plans for the Brazilian forward. Reports indicate that several clubs have shown interest in acquiring Estevao on loan as he seeks more consistent playing time.
Alonso, speaking ahead of Chelsea’s home game against Manchester United, dismissed the notion of loaning the young attacker, emphasizing that the season is still in its early stages and there will be opportunities for Estevao to contribute. “No, no, no,” Alonso said when asked if the club was considering a temporary move for the player. “The season is long and there will be moments for everyone. It’s a process for the team, for Este, for myself, but I’m sure that in the season, he will have his games, his minutes.”
The manager also addressed the situation regarding Estevao’s limited involvement, noting that it is not due to any attitude issues but rather the context of match situations and the start of the campaign. He acknowledged the forward’s professionalism in training and accepted responsibility for any dissatisfaction stemming from lack of minutes. “It is no secret that all players want to be on the pitch,” Alonso said. “When any of them haven’t had enough minutes because of my decision, I have to take the responsibility. But everyone has to be ready and his training and his attitude has been good.”
Estevao’s arrival at Chelsea was met with high expectations, and fans have voiced their support, notably singing his name during matches such as the Anfield fixture versus Liverpool. However, his limited game time has sparked speculation, including reports from Brazil suggesting the forward is frustrated by the lack of opportunities.
Despite that, Alonso remains confident in Estevao’s potential and role in Chelsea’s plans for the remainder of the season.
