Chelsea have initiated talks with Rayo Vallecano regarding a potential transfer for left-back Pep Chavarria. The 28-year-old defender has emerged as a target following the departure of Marc Cucurella, who completed a move to Real Madrid earlier this summer.
Chavarria is currently under contract with Rayo Vallecano for another four years. Despite the interest from Chelsea, it is understood that the Spanish international would not be brought in as a direct replacement for Cucurella. Instead, Chelsea’s new head coach, Xabi Alonso, is expected to promote Jorrel Hato to a more prominent role within the squad.
Rayo Vallecano, who finished as runners-up in the recent Conference League, may seek a considerable fee for Chavarria given his contract length and the club’s competitive status. Chelsea’s pursuit of the full-back is seen as part of a broader effort to strengthen the squad ahead of the coming season under Alonso’s management.
Negotiations are ongoing, with both clubs yet to reach a formal agreement. Chelsea’s transfer strategy appears focused on blending experience with youth development, balancing immediate needs with longer-term squad planning.
