Chelsea have submitted an £8 million offer for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, but the bid was swiftly rejected by the newly promoted Premier League club. Sunderland expressed strong disapproval of the proposal, describing it as insulting and affirming that Xhaka is not for sale this summer.
Xhaka, who joined Sunderland last summer, played a significant role in the team’s successful campaign to secure Europa League qualification following their promotion. The Swiss international, who will turn 34 in September, still has two years remaining on his contract with Sunderland.
The 33-year-old midfielder previously played under Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, where he was instrumental in the team’s Bundesliga title win during an unbeaten season. Under Alonso’s management, Leverkusen also captured the German Cup and reached the final of the Europa League. These connections have fueled speculation about a possible reunion at Stamford Bridge.
Despite Xhaka’s experience and past achievements, Sunderland’s rejection suggests the club’s strong intent to retain him as they prepare for their return to European competition. Chelsea’s relatively modest offer reflects the player’s age, which may also influence the club’s approach to any future negotiations.
