Chelsea’s defensive frailties under manager Xabi Alonso have continued to undermine the team’s overall stability, despite offensive strengths that include a potent front three. The club’s recent signing of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina, has yet to resolve ongoing issues between the posts following a challenging start to the Premier League campaign.
Martinez, 34, joined Chelsea from Aston Villa over the summer for £7.5 million amid hopes that his experience and shot-stopping abilities would bring consistency to a position that has seen multiple changes in the past year. However, the Argentina international has struggled to settle, highlighted by errors such as a missed corner claim that led to Mohamed Belloumi’s second goal for Hull City in the recent draw. This match extended Chelsea’s goalless streak, with the club failing to keep a clean sheet in 20 Premier League games dating back to January.
Before Martinez, goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen were unable to secure the position, with Sanchez now out on loan at Italian side Como and Jorgensen loaned to French club Strasbourg. Chelsea reportedly insisted they were content with their goalkeeping situation over the summer, only to sign Martinez after Sanchez’s poor performance on the opening day of the season against Fulham. Despite Martinez being a two-time Yashin Trophy winner and recently nominated again for the award, his form so far has been inconsistent.
Chelsea’s defensive struggles extend beyond the goalkeeper’s position. The Blues have faced more shots on target than any other Premier League side this season, tied with Crystal Palace and Ipswich. Manager Alonso has openly criticized the team’s defending as “soft,” and former Premier League defender Ashley Williams also described the backline’s performance as “weak.” The defensive instability persists regardless of the formation, whether the team plays a back three or four.
Offensively, Chelsea’s forward line remains productive. Joao Pedro recorded both a goal and an assist in the match against Hull, while Cole Palmer contributed significantly to the build-up of both goals. The attacking trio has maintained strong form, but the pressure for high scoring is unsustainable given the defensive vulnerabilities. Brazilian winger Pedro emphasized the need for rapid adaptation, acknowledging the difficulty of recovering dropped points in the Premier League: “We have to adapt quickly, as soon as possible, because we know how the Premier League is… We need to improve because if you want to compete, you have to improve on that.”
Chelsea’s challenges center on finding defensive solidity and fostering trust between their goalkeeper and defenders. With Martinez’s experience, there remains optimism that he can stabilize the position; however, earlier intervention in the transfer window might have eased the transition. Meanwhile, Alonso faces the task of shoring up a defense that has left a formidable attack carrying the team’s ambitions.
