Starting this autumn, adults aged 40 to 84 in England will be able to access free seven-minute cholesterol checks at 100 NHS high street pharmacies. The initiative aims to identify individuals at risk of heart attacks and strokes earlier by providing rapid results through a simple finger-prick test.
The test measures levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides using a lipid analyser, delivering immediate feedback instead of requiring patients to wait for laboratory analysis. Elevated cholesterol contributes to the buildup of plaque in arteries, which can significantly increase the likelihood of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. According to NHS data, nearly 60 percent of people in England had high cholesterol in 2021.
The launch follows a pilot program conducted in north London by Barts Health NHS Trust and UCLPartners, during which 2,493 patients underwent cholesterol screening. The pilot identified that approximately one in five participants were at risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke within the next ten years. Those found to have high cholesterol levels were offered appropriate medications as part of their care.
David Webb, the chief pharmaceutical officer for England, emphasized the convenience of the new service, stating that making cholesterol checks easily accessible on local high streets allows for earlier detection and intervention. “We can spot ticking time bombs earlier, helping people take action, and prevent heart attacks and strokes before they happen,” he said.
Health Minister Alison McGovern also expressed support for the rollout, describing it as “exactly the type of innovation we want to see across the NHS.” She highlighted how providing rapid cholesterol assessments in community pharmacies makes it simpler for individuals to detect potential health problems at an earlier stage and take steps to protect their wellbeing.
The new service is intended to complement existing NHS health checks and preventive strategies by expanding opportunities for people to monitor heart health in everyday settings without the need for appointments or lab visits. By doing so, health officials hope to improve early identification of cardiovascular risk and reduce related illness and mortality rates across the population.
