National interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe has accepted the challenge set by the newly appointed Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president, Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan, to guide the Harimau Malaya to victory in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup. The tournament’s opening Group A match against Bangladesh, scheduled to take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, marks the start of this campaign.

Cheng Hoe emphasized that the squad is fully aware of the high expectations placed upon them and is focused on securing a strong start in the competition. “In any tournament, the opening match is typically the most difficult,” he said. He also expressed optimism about the players' enthusiasm for participating in the first edition of this regional event.

Ghani, who recently assumed the FAM presidency, expressed confidence in Malaysia's prospects, stating it is entirely feasible for the team to advance to the final. He urged the players to adopt a mindset where they represent the nation rather than the association or its leadership. “They are not playing for me, nor for FAM, but for the country,” he said.

Coach Cheng Hoe confirmed that all 23 players selected for the squad are fit and ready to compete, despite three late changes from the initial lineup. The team has been preparing under tight time constraints but remains positive about their readiness. “We are very happy that we are all together. All the players are ready,” he stated.

Defender and team captain Dion Cools mirrored the coach’s sentiments, acknowledging the limited number of training sessions but affirming the squad's preparedness. “Preparation has gone well. It’s been a short turnaround with very few training sessions, but the team are ready and the players are fit,” Cools said.

Malaysia will look to leverage its current momentum and unity as they begin their campaign in the FIFA ASEAN Cup, aiming to make a strong impact in the tournament’s inaugural edition.
