Cheshire League secured a historic place in the UEFA Regions’ Cup finals next summer after a dramatic late victory on the final day of qualifying matches held in Gothenburg, Sweden. The English amateur side clinched their progression to the last eight of the competition, marking the first time England will be represented at this stage of the tournament exclusively for grassroots and amateur teams.

The decisive moment came in the 96th minute when striker Rob Payne scored a diving header to seal a 3-2 win over the host team, Gothenburg. Payne, who plays for Whalley Range FC, described the goal as an emotional and spontaneous reaction. He recalled the assist from teammate Amir Hajri and said the goal brought a profound sense of relief after a challenging game. The victory enabled Cheshire League to top their qualifying group ahead of the Algarve team from Portugal.

The outcome hinged in part on concurrent results, as Algarve defeated Finland’s Järvenpää United 4-1 in the other group match. Algarve players and staff closely followed the Cheshire League–Gothenburg game via a live Facebook stream broadcast from the Ivars Färg Arena by the Cheshire League chairman Rob Goodwin-Davey. Had Payne not scored his late winner, Algarve would have progressed instead.

The group stage results were tightly contested throughout the fixtures. Cheshire League recorded a narrow 3-2 win over Algarve and a 2-2 draw with Järvenpää United, while Algarve defeated Gothenburg twice with scores of 4-1 and 2-3. Gothenburg and Järvenpää United were effectively eliminated by the final round of matches.

Manager Andy McCann has been credited with fostering a strong team spirit among the players, many of whom were initially strangers but developed close bonds through the campaign. The team chose to embrace a professional mindset despite their amateur status, guided in part by advice from the Football Association’s medical staff.

Payne, 30, who also opened the scoring in the FA Inter-League Cup final earlier this year to secure Cheshire League’s spot in the UEFA Regions’ Cup, highlighted the collective ambition and unity that helped the team overcome doubts during the qualifying tournament. With the finals stage confirmed, the squad now turns its focus to representing England on the continental stage in the months ahead.
