The 4NCL chess league kicked off its 2026 season last weekend at the Copthorne Hotel in Dudley with competitive performances from several top teams. Defending champions Wood Green began their campaign strongly but fell short in their second match, while other teams made notable statements through unexpected victories.

Wood Green started the season with a convincing 5.5-2.5 win over a strong youth squad but faced a narrower 4.5-3.5 result against Warwickshire Select on Sunday. Among the setbacks for Wood Green was a loss by one of their players to a highly talented young opponent. In that game, an unanticipated move from the opponent, 24 Re1-e4, created complications beyond expectations. A miscalculated attempt to capture a pawn with 24...Nxf4? led to a sequence where the knight became pinned and White’s queen launched a decisive attack. Despite efforts to stabilize, the position deteriorated rapidly, culminating in resignation after 30 moves.

Meanwhile, the 4NCL continued to reflect evolving dynamics in team compositions. The "She plays to win Lionesses," a team noted for its all-female lineup that succeeded in reaching the league’s top division, adapted to new regulations requiring mixed-gender representation. Under this rule change, the team included top grandmaster Anish Giri on the top board for their opening round.

Giri's performance was a highlight of the weekend. He faced Alexander Cherniaev in a King’s Indian Defense where both sides engaged in sharp play early on. After provoking a pawn push with 7...Bd7 and 8...h5, Black attempted to restrict White’s kingside activity, but White’s piece coordination, notably with aggressive knight and pawn maneuvers, put Black under heavy pressure.

A critical moment came after 14...c5, a positional weakening that allowed White to build a strong initiative. White continued building threats with well-timed exchanges and pawn advances, culminating in a knight sacrifice on f6 that opened lines and devastated Black’s kingside defenses. Black’s attempts to counter were insufficient, and after several calculated moves, Giri’s side mounted a mating threat that forced resignation on move 24.

Following the first round, three teams—Wood Green, The Sharks’ first team, and Schachattack I—each hold perfect 4/4 match points. Schachattack I impressed by defeating higher-rated teams including CSC Chessplus Kingston and Barnet Knights, defying expectations based on their average ratings.

As the 4NCL progresses through its five sessions this season, the competition remains open, with experienced squads and emerging talents alike vying for top honors in the premier British chess league.
