Hungarian chess champion Judit Polgár has declined an offer to become the country’s president, just one day after Prime Minister Péter Magyar suggested nominating her for the largely ceremonial position. Magyar had planned to meet with Polgár on Monday to discuss the potential appointment.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Polgár, 49, expressed gratitude for the nomination but said she did not feel sufficiently prepared to undertake the role’s significant responsibility. “I do not feel enough strength within me to take on the historic responsibility of uniting a divided nation, so I am unable to accept the request,” she wrote.

The proposal to consider Polgár for the presidency follows several months of political deadlock between Magyar and Tamás Sulyok, the current president who was appointed during former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s administration. The impasse reflects ongoing tensions within Hungary’s political landscape following recent elections.

Polgár, known internationally as one of the strongest female chess players in history, did not provide further details about her decision. The prime minister’s office has yet to comment on the next steps for filling the presidential role.
